The Pain and Triumph of Coming OutAre you gay or bisexual? Are you terrified of coming out? Do you have Bipolar Disorder? Do you have trouble accepting yourself? If so, this book is for you. It's a memoir of a man who almost died from the pain these questions caused. And I'm so relieved he didn't complete his suicide attempt!!! I don't know why it took me so long to read this. Matthew Kinney was my college swimming teammate, and I'm delighted to say we're still friends. I watched him excel in th [...]

I received this book from First Reads. It offers an interesting perspective on emerging sexuality, one that many of us currently struggling of the issue are unaware of. As a part of this community, it's encouraging to see how far we have come as a society regarding homosexual culture in the face of how hopeless the situations often seems from a fixed point of view. I think this book might be best tailored to the pre-college population, as it has a young adult feel and many insights about the co [...]

Just Like You? Is the title of Matthew Alan’s memoir. This is the story of growing up and the struggles that he faced to become the person that he now is. While Kinney is now a happy adult, this was not always the case. While become the person that he is today he had to deal with the struggles of mental illness, suicidal tendencies, and coming out at a gay man. While this book touches on many very series issues, Alan wrote with so much humor that it was such a pleasure to read. And while ther [...]

This memoir is about tough topics, homosexuality and suicidal tendencies. I've often thought if homosexuality were a choice, why would individuals choose such a hard walk through life. Matthew's challenges in accepting who he was/is are sad. I would like to give this book to a number of churches in my own community so they can see homosexuality from the viewpoint of someone who is walking this walk.

This book needs editing, but it's such an inspirational story that I would still recommend it. I read it in one sitting and was engrossed in it despite it's flaws. There are so many books now that tell about the emotional pain of coming to terms with your sexuality and the stress of coming out of the closet, but I think this one is exceptional in part because the author's message is so universal. He's a middle-aged man who has coached and mentored young people for decades and the process has been [...]
