Great combination for Norse history and the connection to the development of English literature. As someone who has studied Norse development I found the first couple of sections slightly simplistic but was a good refresher. As the content progressed the connections between Norse themes and techniques and English writers proved invaluable.

Very thorough introduction to the literature of medieval Iceland. The book is set up in a way to guide the reader to the topic in a chronological order, starting with an introduction to Iceland itself, the setting of much of the literature concerned, through to the impact the works have had on later scholars, authors and poets. In a sense, rather than providing a detailed picture of the literature itself, O'Donoghue places it in context, or rather contexts.

Interesting overview of the history of Norse - Icelandic literature, its political uses and cultural influence down through the centuries. A good primer for further academic study of The Literature as a cultural product / phenomenon, although definitely not recommended for readers who don't already have a lot of familiarity with the source material.

Excellent, a short introduction probably aimed mainly at undergraduate level in the very useful series of Blackwell introductions to literature. It covers the main aspects of the different types of saga and poetry, and also looks at the subsequent history in terms of translations and influence on later authors (mainly English).

A very academic text. The chapters on Norse literature were very good, and insightful, however almost 2/3 of the book are not about Icelandic/Norse literature, but rather how it has been used/intercepted by authors over the last 300-500 years.
