Interesting story about a groundhog who does not feel appreciated and decides to take the day off. It is kind of silly and points out that no one really cares about his feelings, etc. Kids will enjoy it. There is a nice twist at the end. Cue and has fun, colorful illustrations. Recommended for Grades 2-4.

There will be days when you not only feel unappreciated; you are unappreciated. The stress of being stuck in a rut weighs heavily on your entire outlook. You are locked into a time schedule over which you have no control. To make matters even worse you are just plain tired. You NEED a vacation. For most people making a checklist and following it to the letter means you are good to go on that much needed rest. For others their absence leaves a huge hole in the scheme of things affecting a great m [...]

Really cute take on a groundhog who's tired of just being a weather predictor

"Groundhog has more to offer than the forecast. But that's what happens, year after year."So, taking his shadow with him, Groundhog goes on vacation. It is then that people realize that they have taken groundhog for granted. So, when he comes back, they take an interest in him beyond his weather predictions.A nice subtle message about friendship.

This book is perfect for Groundhog Day especially to use in a storytime!

This is a fun picture book and I'm glad I was able to get my hands on a copy in time for Groundhog's Day. Groundhog is burnt out. He's fed up with everyone crowding around his hole one day a year to ask him about one thing only: how much more winter is there going to be? Nobody is interested in him as a person. No one ever asks what he thinks about other subjects. So he decides he's taking the day off this year! This creates a huge problem for the town. They held auditions for a replacement, but [...]

Originally published on my blog, Nine Pages. This is a book that won’t come out of its hole but once a year—and that’s sort of shame. It’s a clever, funny little book, about a groundhog who feels underappreciated so he leaves on an unplanned vacation right before his big day, leaving the town in a lurch and holding auditions for someone to replace him. He just wants the media to ask him about something other than the weather—really, he wants to be asked about himself, the personal quest [...]

Groundhog is upset that the only thing the world wants from him is a weather forecast. He'd like the full celebrity treatment: talk shows, magazine articles, photos etc. Groundhog goes on vacation leaving nobody to perform his famous task on Groundhog's Day so open auditions are held to replace him before the big day. None of the animals that audition are a good fit and the mayor comments as much on TV which Groundhog sees from his vacation spot. He rushes back and his dreams of stardom come tru [...]

Ummm, okay. Have you read Substitute Groundhog by Pat Miller? No? Well, then you might enjoy this book, finding it fresh and charming. But if you have perchance read that book at some point already, you will find this one strangely reminiscent in general. The plot of a groundhog who can't/won't perform its job and the job interviews/auditions which follow is shared by both books. There's also something a bit curious about the fact that both books end with a scene wherein groundhog and another an [...]

Every year Groundhog is surrounded by people and they all want to know one thing, will there be more weeks of Winter or not. They never ask him how hes been or what he likes or anything to do with him personally. Quite frankly hes fed up. No body appreciates him so hes taking a vacation. They'll just have to find someone else to forecast the next few weeks. Although auditions are held no one is quite right but Groundhog is having a fabulous time so why would he come back? A very cute look at the [...]

Funny. Original. Chipper illustrations.Groundhog wanted people to be interested in him, not just his weather predictions about when would spring arrive. Feeling unappreciated, he takes off for a spa vacation, and the town tries in vain to find a suitable replacement before Groundhog Day.When Groundhog realizes the town genuinely misses him when he takes a vacation, he returns just in time for his annual big appearance. This time he is happy, as the reporters interview him about more than just wh [...]

A more humorous selection than the recently published "Groundhog's Dilemma," this Groundhog protagonist is tired of others not appreciating and decides to take off. The world is in an uproar and attempts to continue on by auditioning other animals, to no avail. Groundhog eventually gets his day, and appreciation, which would work well if chosen as a storytime in combination with ideas about sharing and appreciation. Recommended.

I loved this book about groundhog not feeling appreciated so he is going on vacation instead of participating in groundhog's day. Can he be replaced? Will he stay on vacation? This was funny and cute. A little long for toddler's but I think some discussion questions could break it up and make it work.

Groundhog is tired of this job and needs to take the day off. Leaves a note and goes on vacation. The animals hold auditions for his replacement, but nobody seems to fit. Groundhog hears that there is trouble. Comes back home to surprise everyone only to find out that he is a day early. In the end he realizes that he indeed loves his job.

Super fun book about Groundhog's Day and one fed up groundhog. Great illustrations and fun story, though I could have done with a bit more from groundhog. I wish he weren't quite so preoccupied with whether everyone liked him

There are not a lot of books out there about Groundhog's Day, which is both a pro and a con for this book. On the one hand, it's a cute story to read on Groundhog's Day. On the other, this book is irrelevant for the rest of the year. Still, this silly story should keep kids' interest.

Tired of being taken advantage of, Groundhog decides to just skip the wear and tear of Ground Hog Day. Relaxing down south iproves the perfect answer, until he finds out that he's irreplaceable. Illustrations by Brett Helquist add just the right amount of zip to this non traditional fun tale.
