      This is a strange book, combining poetic descriptions, earthy humour and satire, sometimes in the same sentence: "Hamza Petrika took his brother’s rubber boots under his arm and started back toward the bear reserve without a word, letting out colossal farts on the way, as if his soul was fast departing his body." Some readers will be shocked by this earthiness, by the casual way the "hero" shares the wife of another man and especially by the portrayal of paedophilia. A group I belong to has r [...]

      It is hard to describe this book. It feels, as this really is the correct word, yes, feels timeless, yet it does take place in a by-gone time in a very remote mountain region, on the border.It feels like a giant allegorical web is being woven with every story, mostly told by the main character, an Andrei Bodor, though this is not his real name. Yet, just what it is an allegory of is not so clear, and perhaps this is the point. It also feels like a Kafkaesque satire of identity papers, and name t [...]

      First appearing in Hungary 2 decades ago, even then Bodor's novel was published too late.  There is scant hope we will now decipher it--now or even later.  Probably the author himself had lost its entire meaning even as he set it down, word by haunting word.  Yes, it will continue to entertain (for those amused by the absurd, surreal and near-obscene), but we can never hope to know why the book exists. More an accidental threat than a tale of liberation, more a fortunate celebration than an e [...]

      I enjoyed it but I'm not sure that I entirely understood it. It was like 'Stalker' but directed by the Coen Brothers - eerie things with a deadpan sense of humor.

      Zaujímavé príbehy, niekedy som mal pocit, ako keby som skutočne žil v Zóne dlhé roky.

      În tușe poetice și sumbre, Zona Sinistra ne poartă într-un loc fără o ancorare clară în spațiu și în timp, unde realitatea se împletește cu un strop de fantastic și absurd, dând naștere unei povești de o frumusețe stranie. Prea puțin cunoscut, acest roman scris de un maghiar născut în România vorbește despre o lume imaginară, însă atât de familiară prin ecourile ce răzbat din perioada comunistă.Undeva în nordul țării, la granița cu Ucraina, se află zona Sinist [...]

      Definitely not beach reading. Anti-beach. Lacks typical literary devices like coherent plot, building and releasing tension, non-stilted dialogue, and empathic characters. It does have surrealism, grotesquery, and excessive description of weather and surroundings. Is it more than a statement of how soviet militarization dehumanized entire regions of people? Perhaps, but that doesn't make it enjoyable, and it gets 2 stars. I give it a bonus star for using literary devices to make a point.

      This is a fantastic book. I would argue that it is nothing but an ambiance and a very dark one. The landscape descriptions, the sheer cruelty of all characters and the complete lack of emotions all add up to the uneasy feeling that the world Bodor imagines might not be as far from the world we live in. The characters' names are fantastic, not sure if the translation to other languages can give it back.

      true thriller; the reread no less than an ordeal; chapters entitled with suggestive details; thick atmosphere; loosely depicted roots of events; vaguely interwined glimpses of characters' lives; scatological insertions are dearest to my heart; ambiental/isolationist/freak-folkish view of an idle god's parochial universe;

      creative! an entire world created from scratch, resplendent with odors and colors. irreverent came to mind over and over again. a weird book with ample detail and richness, despite characters I had no connection to. well written. plot lacked direction.

      Saw this randomly on a shelf at a hipster reading room / event space. Looks a little wacky, a little Pelevin-y, and very cool.
