      I'm a big fan of the comedian and longtime star of film short subjects Charley Chase, which of course is why I borrowed this only biography of him interlibrary, and why I'm partial to it. Honestly, though, I think the authors did an excellent job. The writing is clear and interesting, and the book is clearly the product of a long period of exhaustive, original, and affectionate research.       It's the only biography written on comedian Charley Chase and overall, it's good. The drawback is that it was written over 50 years after the passing of the comedian, so there were few contemporaries left who could shed light on his life. Still, the author did a great job of piecing together his life and career.

      Charley Chase was a talented comedian/director whose work is slowly becoming more available. His early death and the fact that his films were not run on television the way the Our Gang films and the Laurel and Hardy comedies were contributed to his lack of notoriety.
