Fruit Is A Suitcase for Seeds, by Jean Richards, is a great informational text to teach children about how plants and trees grow by using a metaphor of fruit as a suitcase that protects seeds. I think this metaphor is fantastic to help kids understand the process behind how seeds travel and grow to be plants. The images were vivid and the scientific processes were explained in a way that all students could understand and remember. Personally, I would use this text if I teach First Grade to intro [...]

Good book to use to introduce the plant cycle. It's fun and informative. It would be cool to do a project where you open up different fruits and then try to plant the seeds and watch them grow.

This is an informative nonfiction book about how seeds travel and grow. It has nice illustrations of various fruits and animals. It encourages children to think of fruits as "suitcases" that travel in various ways, either by wind, water, animal scat, etc. I like using this book to teach children from ages 3-5 about seeds.

I have actually used this book in a preschool class. It is a very basic book about plants growing and how they move around. At the end of the book there is a question and answer section. I even learned some new things about fruits and vegetables.

Super metaphor for kids--using the idea of a fruit being a suitcase for a seed. The text is short and sweet, and the watercolor illustrations are easy for a little one to interpret and also full of whimsical details. If I were a teacher, I'd gobble this one up for my budding naturalists!

Creative (and solid) way of teaching function of fruits. Kids are always taught, "A fruit is anything with seeds inside it." Reinforces and elaborates on that simple idea. Plus the watercolor illustrations are quite lovely.
