The ripples of change in consumer concern over product provenance and ingredients are fast becoming a wave which will encompass the entire catering industry. At long last in my view – it is no longer acceptable to buy on price, we must be concerned and knowledgeable about the products we buy, where they come from and the ingredients they contain.
At Venus, it is also critically important to understand the impact our purchasing has on the environment. We care about how things are made, reared and grown. We care about whether or not our purchasing is providing a beneficial impact on the environment. We purchase from over 30 suppliers located within 50 miles of our 4 cafes and can be confident in the quality and ingredients used in all of these locally sourced products.
Our environmental concern is not just altruistic. We know that our customers also care. We take every opportunity to inform them of what we are doing and why. The result is double digit sales growth every year for the last 6 years. Sourcing local food and drink is now a must for every Cornish business involved in the hospitality sector. Our customers expect us to provide it and it is one of the key reasons for visiting the region.
The Cornwall Food Finder is an excellent source of information about the fantastic local produce available here in Cornwall. It is incumbent on all of us to support local producers and for them to support the local hospitality industry. Working together, we provide a wonderfully diverse & vibrant food and drink industry which will ensure the continued long term economic viability of the tourism industry in Cornwall.
