Cornwall foodfinder
The Cornwall Food Programme has generated a great deal of interest throughout the UK and is recognised as a leading example of what can be achieved in the public sector in sustainable food procurement. When asked what makes our programme so successful the answer is simple, our Cornish products and producers. We are very fortunate in having such a diverse range of quality seasonal produce in Cornwall from suppliers who care so passionately about what they offer.
The programme recognises the pivotal role the NHS can play within their local community assisting in education with regard to good food and nutrition. Earlier this year we took part in the 'Celebration of a Year of Food and Farming' event at the Eden Project where many local schools were invited to attend. Surely there must be a strong argument for ensuring that this concept is included in the national curriculum for all children introducing them to locally sourced food. For me it was inspiring to see young children so enthused about many of the ingredients that were on display.
Never has fresh local produce received so much media attention continually extolling the virtues of purchasing locally, but the momentum must be maintained. In Mediterranean countries meals have always played an important part of their society, where nothing is wasted but everything is appreciated and enjoyed. I believe that we are now starting to view food differently and I would say to everyone who picks up a copy of this year’s Cornwall foodfinder, support your local producer, taste and be amazed at the quality of produce on your doorstep.
Lastly may I quote from J.R.R. Tolkien
‘If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world’.
