Well-travelled foodie, Ally Watkins, was frustrated at the lack of variety of herbs and spices available in Cornwall. Her solution was to put together a collection of 50 spices and trial a market stall. The end result is Nature Kitchen, which now stocks over 700 herbs and spices at its shop in Biddicks Court, St Austell and a healthy online trade.

Nature Kitchen make many of their own spice blends and stock an excellent range of Thai, Chinese, Indian, Mediterranean herbs and spices, plus olives, vinegars, oils, Turkish Delight, baklava and healthy snacks. Medicinal, as well as edible herbs and spices are stocked and in the Summer fresh vegetable and herb plants are also available. The shop is a foodie Mecca with chefs coming in looking for inspiration and even the odd celebrity popping in.

The road to success has not been smooth and sweet-smelling, however. Beginner’s mistakes, run-ins with bad suppliers, the loss of all the stock through flooding and a battle with serious illness all added to the trials of establishing a fledgling business. Family stepped in to provide illness cover which was a blessing in disguise as the fresh brains and wide range of experience resulted in more efficient and streamlined business.

Looking to the future, Nature Kitchen is concentrating on improving the website (www.naturekitchen.co.uk) and developing their reputation through outdoor events. In addition, February sees the first five “Spice Merchants in a Box” starting to trade at events, festivals and farmers markets around Cornwall. So the future is looking exciting!
