CASE STUDY
Trevilley Farm & Shop

 - A Family Business

Trevilley Farm, located just off the A392 in between Newquay and Quintrell Downs, is run by Keith and Gill Barrett, the fifth generation of their family to work the land.  Indeed, five members of the family are involved in the running of the farm shop.

Trevilley Farm uses traditional farming methods to produce quality foods including beef, lamb, vegetables, turkeys and geese, as well as specialty multi-bird rolls for Christmas.  All beef is hung for a minimum of two weeks and comes from the herd of South Devonshire cows.  Meat from the rarebreed Galloway cattle is available in the farm shop.  Turkeys are also hung for two weeks and the bronze turkeys are notable for their succulence and full flavour.  A wide variety of frozen game (fresh sometimes available), all sourced from Cornwall, is also available including rabbit, pheasant, partridge, venison and guinea fowl.

The farm shop is in its fifth year and has stock from over 60 Cornish suppliers.  In addition, it sells the farm’s own jams, marmalades, chutneys and pickles and a wide variety of bakery goods are made daily including bread, Cornish pasties, pies, quiches, sausage rolls, cake and more.  Duck eggs are also available from the farm’s ducks.  The farm shop is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm, except for Bank Holidays (open Good Friday).

A Weekly Vegetable/Produce Box Delivery Scheme is available to consumers in the Newquay area, offering a wide range of vegetables, meats, dairy and bakery products.  Holiday makers to the county can also benefit by ordering a Trevilley Farm Welcome Hamper to greet them at their accommodation.  Parties and wedding receptions can be held in the “Marquee Field”.  The marquee can be set up in advance and there is additional car parking for guests.  A full catering service for local events, from corporate hospitality tents to private parties at home is also available.  The ethos to provide the best quality food, sourced as locally as possible.

CHEFS

Promoting safer, healthier, local food in Cornwall

The Cornwall Healthier Eating and Food Safety (CHEFS) Award is awarded by Cornwall Council’s Public Health and Protection Service, in partnership with the Eatsome Programme, part of the NHS Cornwall Health Promotion Service. The scheme rewards caterers who adopt and maintain a high degree of food safety and standards and offer customers healthier options on menus.  Customers are guaranteed that a percentage of the menu is sourced locally.  However, businesses are not expected to ensure that every dish served or item sold meets all the criteria - it’s about consumer choice.

The award has three levels:  gold, silver and bronze, each with its own criteria.  Successful businesses get a certificate and a window sticker for display.  They will also be added to the list of current award winners which is displayed on Cornwall Council’s website at
www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=17480. Most food catering businesses in Cornwall can apply.  If you would like to nominate a business for the award or you run a catering business yourself and would like to find out more e-mail jbenson@cornwall.gov.uk or telephone 01872 324311 and ask to speak to Julie Benson.

Why not:
- Increase your sales and customers’ satisfaction
- Give your business a competitive edge
- Enhance your reputation by maintaining good hygiene practices and offering healthy options

"Beheaded", the strongest ale brewed by Redruth's Keltek Brewery, has taken bronze in the Strong cask Ale category at the 18th Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) South West Beer Competition

Meanwhile, St Austell Brewery's Proper Job
was awarded the Gold Award, while Black Prince took the Silver Award in the mild beer category at the SIBA National Beer Competition.  Further celebrations were due when three St Austell Brewery bottled ales beat off worldwide competition to win top honours in the International Beer Challenge.  Clouded Yellow scooped a Gold award in the Repackaged Ales category for the innovative design and marketing of its bottle and label, Proper Job IPA was awarded Silver in the same category and also received a Commended in the Ales category and St Austell Brewery's latest ale, Smugglers, received Commended in the Strong Beer group.

Truro-based Skinners Brewery have also had a good year so far.  After Betty Stogs was consistently best-selling beer at selected Waitrose stores in 2008, it was upgraded to "full listing" in January and it is now available in all of Waitrose's 260 UK stores.  Cornish Knocker and Heligan Honey were added to their range at the same time and were amongst the best selling beer lines at 150 Waitrose stores in March.

Cornish Knocker has also won silver in the best bitter category of the 2009 Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Peterborough Beer Festival and Ginger Tosser - originally created for Pancake Day - won the Cornish champion beer title at the CAMRA Falmouth Beer Festival to qualify for next year's Champion Beer of Great Britain competition.  Ginger Tosser was second overall in the entire festival, while Pennycomequick took silver in the stout class.

St Agnes freehouse, The Driftwood Spars, has been named CAMRA Kernow Pub of the Year for the second year running.  The Driftwood was hailed Cornwall's best hostelry in 2010 for the quality of its beer, its atmosphere and its work to promote real ale on a wider scale.

Penzance Vineyard, Polgoon, has received a Gold Award for its Sparkling Raspberry Aval and a Silver Award for its very latest drink, a sparkling Polgoon Peren (a Perry) at the Taste of the West Awards.  The new Aval Rose is increasingly catching the attention of bars, restaurants and stockists across the South West and the UK, from Rick Stein's Deli in Padstow and the River Cottage Canteen in Axminster, to Fortnum and Mason and the Whole Foods Market in London.

Retallick Family Butchers from Lizard village won the inaugural World Hogs Pudding Championships.  The event, held in Truro aimed to raise the profile of this neglected Westcountry sausage.

Chough Bakery claimed 16 prizes across 36 classes at the 2009 Western Bakery Championships, including first prize in the baguette and West Country cream tea scones classes and the family-owned company was highest-placed Cornish business in the Cornish pasty classes, with second and third positions.  This follows on from their success in the Savoury Bakery class in the 2009 Taste of the West Product Awards, when the Padstow firm won one gold, four silver and two bronze awards.

And finally... Cornwall's quest to gain Protected Geographical Indicator (PGI) status for the Cornish pasty is well underway and the decision may be made by the European Commission by Christmas this year or in early 2011.
