Proper Job!

St Austell Brewery is celebrating after its Proper Job Indian Pale Ale (IPA) scooped the title of Champion Bottled Beer of Britain at the UK’s biggest beer festival. St Austell was the only Cornish brewery to win a Gold medal at the prestigious Great British Beer Festival held at Earl’s Court exhibition centre in London (Wednesday, August 2 2011).

It is the second successive year the Brewery has won the title after Admiral’s Ale was crowned Champion Bottled Beer of Britain 2010 in the flagship awards run by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) - regarded as the industry Oscars.

Roger Ryman, St Austell Brewery head brewer, said: “This event puts us head to head against some great beers from right across the UK so we’re incredibly pleased to see Proper Job honoured in this way, particularly after the success of Admiral’s Ale last year. Both awards have come following the Brewery’s major investment in 2009 in installing our own bottling line and are a real endorsement of that investment and the growing reputation nationally of our ‘brewed and bottled in Cornwall’ ales.”

Cornish Crisps and SALSA

Last Year the Cornish Crisp company (http://www.thecornishcrisp.co.uk) received Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) accreditation for its quality production.  SALSA certification is only granted to suppliers who are able to demonstrate to an auditor that they are able to produce safe and legal food and are committed to continually meeting the requirements of the SALSA Standard.

Nearly one year on Sue Wolstenholme, Managing Director of the Cornish Crisp Company tells us how it has affected business:

“SALSA accreditation has taken us to a new level in sales helping us to get a foot in the door with national buyers and further secure the future for our staff and the business. This was a real achievement for our small team who constantly put in a great deal of effort to ensure all of our processes are carefully documented so we have full traceability and also to make sure we are continually producing crisps that meet our very high standards.

Since achieving SALSA back in November 2010, we have had a busy year with further audits from national buyers who have been impressed with our operation. We have launched an unsalted crisp in support of Cornwall Air Ambulance named the ‘Resuscitator’ and will soon be sending our next round of donations to our supported charities whose cheques have been boosted by increased sales over the past few months.”

Congratulations to the Cornish Crisp Company from the Cornwall Foodfinder team! To find out more about SALSA visit their website http://www.salsafood.co.uk/

Case Study - Tregothnan

The Tregothnan estate is the first tea plantation in the UK as well as being the first place outside of New Zealand to produce Manuka honey.

Tregothnan has been home to the Boscawen family since 1335. The Estate, in Kent and Cornwall, is internationally known for producing the only tea grown in England. A diversity of lands allows production of English tea, sustainable coppiced charcoal, Manuka honey and Kea plum jam. Seasonal British flowers are sourced from the Tregothnan estate and surrounding lands for a range of hand-tied English bouquets.

The estate currently employs 20 people and is closed to the public, however, private garden visits can be arranged at £50 per person including a sumptuous Tregothnan cream tea in the 19th Century summer house.

The exceptional nature of their produce means it can be no surprise that Tregothnan retailers include prestigious establishments: Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols as well as artisan delis and farm shops.

The Woodyard Shop is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (closed bank holidays and weekends) and although it is closed to the public it is possible to explore this unique working estate online at www.tregothnan.com

Address: The Woodyard, Truro, Cornwall TR2 4AJ
