| ETHICAL VEAL NOW BY MAIL ORDER |
BOCADDON FARM VEAL, based at Lanreath, in Looe, has responded to increasing demand for ethical veal by launching a mail order service. Previously available only at farmers' markets in the South West of England, their welfare-friendly rose veal can now be sent anywhere in the UK from their farm in South East Cornwall.
Owner Jon Brown said "The reaction to our product from local customers has been fantastically positive. We have had enquiries from all over the country in the past year, and we're delighted that we can now supply people who can't make it down to the farm or to local markets."
Jon's wife, Vicky, added "We call our product 'Real Veal', as the calves have a good life in the open air with plenty of room to run around and a varied diet. The meat produced is a rich pink colour, and we are already supplying some of Cornwall's top restaurants".
Customers can choose from two mixed boxes to sample different Real Veal cuts. In addition, special orders can be arranged for those with specific requirements.
Bocaddon Farm Veal was established in September 2006. Jon and Vicky rear the bull calves from Vicky's brother's dairy herd in welfare-friendly conditions.
The meat can be purchased at Exeter, Lostwithiel and Truro farmers' markets. Contact Jon and Vicky on Tel 01503 220991, email: bocaddon@hotmail.co.uk, www.bocaddonfarmveal.com. |

VICKY'S BREAD
Sourdough, multigrain loves and baguettes are what keeps Vicky Royall of Vicky's Bread up at night. Traditionally made, with no stabilisers or preservatives, the baking process usually begins around 2am, with each baguette rolled by hand. At the same time the sourdough process, begun a day previously to allow fermentation, begins, with the mixture added to organic flour, salt and water and left to rise until it is ready to be weighed and shaped. You can find Vicky's Bread at village shops in the west of the county or call at the bakery between 7am and midday Tuesday to Friday, at Tresprison, Helston Tel: 01326 572084 |

TASTE CORNWALL SHOP
Bay Tree Hill, Liskeard
"If it isn't local we won't sell it" is the strapline for a new shop in Bay Tree Hill, Liskeard. The Taste Cornwall Shop, opened in the middle of February, is managed by Cornish Guild of Smallholders and offers a wide range of local produce from local sausages, to hand made cakes and bread, to fresh veg, local cheeses and preserves. Only produce from members of GCOS is sold there, and the organisers are keen to attract more suppliers selling a range of products especially fresh vegetables - membership costs a very reasonable £10 per year. FOOD SERVICE MEMBERS
Each month on this site we will feature an outstanding restaurant or hotel which prides itself on its use of fresh local produce. As members of Taste of the West these establishments are crucial to the development of the food supply chain throughout the county.
This month our featured business is The Old Coastguard Hotel in Mousehole, near Penzance. You can follow in the footsteps of Dylan Thomas who once described Mousehole as "the most beautiful village in England" and certainly the waterfront view from the hotel is difficult to beat.
Executive Chef Barnaby Mason uses beef and lamb from Vivian Olds butchers in St Just, fish is delivered daily by W Stevenson and Sons direct from Newlyn fishmarket, cheese boards groan with local offerings such as Cornish Blue, Yarg and Trelawney, organic free range eggs and vegetables including early new potatoes come from neighbouring farms. All desserts, including ice creams and sorbets, and breads and petit fours, are made on the premises under the direction of the Head Pastry Chef, Kate Macmaster.
The hotel boasts AA Two Rosette status and is recommended in the Good Food Guide 2008. During the month of March (excluding Easter) you can stay at The Old Coastguard for 3 nights at the price of two. Or, alternatively, enjoy a Quick Getaway, designed to allow you to enjoy the evening dining experience (pictured above), a room for two, including breakfast for £30.
Contact The Old Coastguard Hotel, Mousehole on Tel: 01736 731222, email: bookings@oldcoastguardhotel.co.uk or visit www.oldcoastguardhotel.co.uk
